Great Lakes CORE – Organizational Conference Call

Wednesday, April 6th, 9 PM Eastern /8C PM Central

Call Notes

Conference call information:

Dial-in Number: (605) 475-4000
Participant Access Code: 213602#

Attendees:
Steve the Ghost
Spotter
Doxie
Mr. Breedlove
Mr. Krueger
Planeto (Steve-o)
Flipit
Thunderhawk
Kiri
Adam

Who have I missed??

Agenda:

Regional Summit CORE meeting:
Breedlove and Krueger shared that there was a lot of excitement about the CORE project
at the Regional Summit. There should be some mailings coming out of the summit to
update us on next steps for the CORE project.

Fundraising:
We need to raise a considerable amount of funding – both for materials / supplies for the
project and for transportation to the playa. Transportation will be the most expensive
part of this project, due to the price of travel.

Some fundraising ideas brainstormed by the group:
• Adam and his friend John have proposed doing a fundraiser event / party at a
lounge in Indiana (Near Merriville area.)

•
•
•
•
•

Fundraiser event in Chicago at Café Lura
Art Grant Application (To Chicago Arts Grant Committee)
Film Festival (Wisconsin)
Kickstarter – (Kiri will look into this)
Grants from other groups
o Lakes of Fire
o Detroit region
o Others?
Stephanie suggested it might be an idea to sell water at events.
o Buy water in bulk (24 pack cases), and sell for $2/bottle
o Possibly sell at closing party for We Burn
§ (Update: Ghost checked w/ Firewater Lounge; they are not keen
on the idea of adding another fundraiser to their event at this time.
They may consider a donation later; or helping to host a fundraiser
event.)
Schwag – Patches, screen printing, stickers
o Patches: Check w/ Devin on where he ordered patches
o Patches: Spotter will check with a friend of his who has info on patches
o Richard Kelly makes pins
§ Update: Richard is a new RC for Chicago. He makes pins for
groups.
o Stephanie described how a friend makes chapstick and sells that.

•

•

Funds raised at Resonate: Several cans were taken around by volunteers at Resonate –
over a hundred dollars was collected in donations from Resonate attendees.

Project overview and presentation documents
Ghost will work on developing a project overview presentation
Update: Presentation made at Chicago town hall. File is available for
sharing. Will send to Breedlove for inclusion on the GL CORE website.
Build
Locations and Schedules
Spotter has offered to host a pre-build weekend at his house in Kankakee in July. He has
two weekends schedule:
July 9-10, and
Jule 16-17.
He will host people to come stay, spend the night; have a cookout. He has a good
workshop, and plenty of room outside and inside.
Consider coming down on Friday evening, if possible – that way all of Saturday can be
productive; rather than missing a good part of the day driving down on Saturday.

GL CORE at Lakes of Fire
What would we like to do?
Proposed to build a small lighthouse (about 6-8’ tall) to have at LoF – as a
centerpiece of our effort; and to consider burning as an effigy. (The campground hosts
have also expressed an interest in having a small lighthouse donated to the location.)

Do we want to have a place where regional groups can build/paint/decorate a
component?
Doxie says that we can sign up for a theme camp and get placement. (Update:
Ghost filled in the placement questionnaire, to request room for the effigy and a
workspace.)
Can we have a “booth” space? Or a workshop sort of space?
Place to recruit volunteers for the builds, and ON PLAYA! We need a number of
Playa crew members. Docents; Fire crew, LNT crew, etc.
Is there a way to do fundraising at LoF?
Not sure – needs further research. On the face of it, appears to violate the “No
commerce” expectation.

Looks like we’re considering 2 components for the CORE presence at LoF:
• Art piece (the little lighthouse)
• Info Booth / Workspace
o Place for signups
o Paint / decorate Art Panels (for inclusion in the lighthouse.)
• Maybe place an info booth or display near the greeters station??

Interfuse
Thunderhawk and Adrianne are planning on going to Intefuse (who else?)
Can we get information for them to take to Interfuse?
Maybe get signups for playa volunteers there??

Shipping
Shipping is going to be our major expense.
• UHaul is ~$1 / mile for the rental vehicle, plus $2-4K in fuel.
• Container – 1 way is apx 4200 (Spotter)
• Can we get someone who is driving to include the effigy?
• Can we consider buying/ our own truck?
• Share with another group?
• Other shippers (Damien?)

Webpage:
Mr. Breedlove has put together a verra verra nice webpage at:

http://greatlakescore.wordpress.com/

Also a facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/GreatLakesCORE

He will update the pages with the new logos, as well as the drawings of the
designs.

Burning Man
Who can arrive early?
• Monday before:
o Spotter

o Adam and John
o Mai (depending on Job)
o Adrianne (not sure)
• Early (Tues / Wednesday?)
o Doxie (Wed)
o Ghost (Tues, possibly Monday?)
o Krueger (Tuesday, possibly Monday)
o Stephanie
Camp location – we will probably accept Mr. Breedlove’s kind offer to camp near
BwB – which is on the esplanade. Need to determine how many of us there are, and
where we’ll be.

Roles:
•
•
•
•

Tools

We’ll need tools at BRC for fire management and LNT:
• Rakes
• Shovels
• Magentic Rake
• Gloves
Roles
Discuss some of the roles as listed below. (Any others that you all see important?)
Team Roles - I realize that these may change; but we can consider penciling in temporary
leads for the following:

Project Lead - Ghost and Spotter
Aesthetics – Kiri and Thunderhawk
Pyro – Krueger
LNT – Downtown Dave

Regional Contribution
What sort of 'thing' will each participating region create?
(Part of design / Aesthtics?)
• “Tribal” panels –
o Various groups and regions decorate a 2x2 or similar sized panel
to be placed within the lighthouse.
• Other materials?
• Playatech builds?
• Painting/decorating playatech?

Design of our Lighthouse
Spotter sent out a schematic - did everyone see it? Comments?

Light - Lens / Light – a design has not yet been determined. Looking at different options.

Participating Regional Groups:

• Chicago (BURN and other groups)

• Detroit

• Toronto

• WI

• IN

• MN

**********

After reading the notes I thought of a few things.

One. I don’t care if we burn the small lighthouse I built or just donate it to Don. The owner of Lucky lake. Pretty much everything I have built for BM events has been burned or is now still at Willow Ranch so being able to see something I built more than once sounds fine with me. But I will go with the flow.

Two. I see Thunderhawk and Kiri are on aesthetics. Does that go for light? If so I wanted to let them know if they did not read the post a while back that we are limited to 300watts at night. And 150watts during the day. Which limits our light output for a rotating beacon.

Steve and I had talked about just putting the big red tower light that we had at LOF last year inside the lighthouse and mount it on the top of our Effigy and put a lot of led rope lights in it. It’s about 3ft tall and looks really cool. That way it can blink or do other stuff that I have a controller for. It won’t rotate but it is sealed and people can’t mess with it unless they have tools or a hammer and it won’t use many watts.

As for indoor and outdoor lighting I was thinking of using Par lamp holders. They are inexpensive and then we can buy fluorescent par lamps and use them as spots & floods for the art inside and outside lighting. I also have some track lighting we could use for the inside. That way we could mount it to the inside deck and shin it both ways or whatever way we want.

Also not in the notes but part of aesthetics is the painting of the artwork. I have given some wood to Adreinne &,Planeto to pass out. I’m not sure what has happened to that stuff so far but hope it is being passed around and painted on so it can be brought to LOF. Also when we get to LOF are we going to provide an area for people to paint more art or just the wood? And are we going to provide paint?- Scott Potter

Monday, Feb 28th, 8 PM Eastern /7C PM Central

Attendees:
Steve the Ghost
Spotter
Doxie
Mr. Breedlove
Planeto (Steve-o)
Flipit

Welcome to the GL CORE Planning and Organizing Conference call

Design of our Lighthouse

Ideas/suggestions

Lighthouse tower

Tower w/ Keeper house- front runner

Light pillars

Other things…

The team discussed the various options, and decided that we wished to continue with a lighthouse with an attached keeper-house design.

Teams, Roles, and callouts

The following are just some of the roles that we seen needing to be done to make this success – and truly be a collaborative, cross-regional project.

There are lots of things for people to do beyond the ‘building’ of this critter:

Design / Aesthetic team

Build team

Leave No Trace team (On playa)

Fire / Safety team (On Playa)

Fundraising / Grant / Event teams

Fundraising

Party / Event planners

Artists

Design

Doing something at Lakes of Fire

Many of these roles can be done by people who can’t make it to the playa, but still want to be part of making something neat.

We need to get callouts for people wanting to join and do things as soon as possible. We don’t really need “team leads” as yet – get the participants, and leads will shake out. We need “Do-ers”

BUILD! We also need people who know how to use tools (or are willing to help while learning a bit about construction of large art pieces.) Carpenters, Crews, and Accomplices!

Tool and Equipment Wish List

Doxie started a list, what other items can we add?

WISH LIST

Tools;
compound miter with slide
hand tools; like hammers and drills etc
air guns
nails
screws
measuring tapes
magnetic rake (for cleanup of dropped nails, screws, etc.)

Art Supplies:
paint
brushes
rollers
drop cloth
paint gun

Schedules and Timelines

Planning

Design

Build

Pre-build weekends

Early arrival on playa, and assemble

On-playa:

Crews (“Lighthouse keepers” (guardians), Safety, Burn, LNT, etc.

Need to schedule these things.

Build weekends?

Spotter’s Place? (Kankakee, IL)

Depends on getting the wood.

Weekends / Dates – To be finalized. (Yes, you can bring a date, but they should help with the project, too.)

Idea is to pre-fab the structure during the build weekends, and screw it together once on playa for final assembly.
do it two weekends at Spotters. Looking at July dates??

Weekend 1: Pre-fab the walls of the lighthouse tower

Weekend 2: Decorate and build light keeper house

Regional / Group Participation Idea:

Regional Contribution (what sort of ‘thing’ will each participating region create?)

In addition to helping build the lighthouse structure, we also are looking for ways that different groups/cities/tribes can contribute something to the lighthouse (we need a ‘catchier’ name) that will go out to the playa, even if those people can’t.

Idea Groups use a 4×4 square, or some other shape, and decorate them at LOF or bring them decorated ahead of time. These are then attached to the structure (or even used as the walls).

Don’t want “graffiti” looking panels or artwork – would like these to be nice representations of the participating city/region/group – showing the diversity and unity across our GL Region.

This provides an opportunity for those that can’t make the playa to still send something out for the rest of the Burning Man world to see (And be awed by our awesomeness.)

STILL plenty of other needs for participation – both from those going to the playa, and those not able to make it out – See “Call Out/Participation” sections, below.

Logo

We need a logo for our GL Core project

Should be able to be silk screened (so a black and white version), and/or made into patches.

Design submission callout

This isn’t a ‘contest’, so there aren’t ‘prizes’, really.

Still get the pride of knowing that you were able to contribute to the team

Use greatlakescore@gmail.com email address for submissions

Suggestions for themes:

An outline of the Great Lakes region, with a lighthouse superimposed? Names of participating regions/cities circling?

A lighthouse, w/ names…

Other ideas?

Email callout for logo submissions was sent out 3/2/2011 to members of CORE (and asked to be forwarded to as many groups/people as possible.)

Fundraising

We need ideas and people to take a lead on them

Ideas for fundraisers

Bar nights

Schwag packs

Other ideas??

Grants

Presentations to local groups.

What are our funding targets/sources

BM Core Grant

Matching grant?

Fundraiser events?

Kickstarter

Regional Groups:

BURN

Detroit

Toronto

WI?

IN?

Lakes of Fire

Other grant sources?
